Former US President Joe Biden launched one of his fiercest attacks on MAGA chief Donald Trump during a speech in Omaha on Friday, accusing the president of damaging America’s institutions and mocking his White House renovation. Speaking at the Nebraska Democratic Party gala, the former president told supporters that he believes Trump’s actions have gone far beyond what he expected.“I knew Trump was going to bring a wrecking ball to the country, but I had no idea, I have to admit, I didn’t know there was going to be a real wrecking ball,” Biden said, referring to Trump’s demolition of the East Wing to build a massive 90,000-square-foot, $300 million ballroom at the White House. “This is a great symbol of his presidency. Trump delivered a devastating blow not only to the people’s home, but also to the Constitution, to the rule of law, to our democracy itself.»Biden also mocked Trump’s claim that the United States was living in a “golden age.” He said: “Now he says we are in a ‘golden age’. The only gold is what it hangs on the mantle,” criticizes the ornate additions Trump has made to the Oval Office.Speaking at times as if Trump were in the room, Biden said, “You’re acting in a way that embarrasses us as a nation, frankly.” He claimed Trump was prioritizing the interests of his wealthy friends, saying, “You work for us, Mr. President. We don’t work for you. You work for us, not just billionaires and millionaires. I’m angry.”Biden also talked about his recent treatment for prostate cancer and used his own experience to discuss the importance of affordable health care. “I thank God for the doctors and nurses and for the incredible breakthroughs we are making in cancer research,” he said. “Now Trump and his fellow Republicans are cutting public health care funding and making it more expensive, more expensive for just about everyone.»His remarks came during the nation’s longest government shutdown. Democrats have refused to support the Republican funding bill because it excludes the extension of subsidies that expire at the end of the year, according to CNN. Biden celebrated the Democrats’ sweeping victories on Tuesday, saying, “The Democratic Party is back!” Victories included the election of Zohran Mamdani as mayor of New York and the gubernatorial victories of Abigail Spanberger in Virginia and Mickey Sherrill in New Jersey. California also passed a redistricting measure backed by Democrats. He said the results show that “the American people are sending a message … to Trump and his crowd” and that they have rejected Trump’s agenda. Biden concluded with a message of defiance, saying, “I know this nation. I know the American people. And this is what I know: No one, no one, not even the president, can destroy our democracy if we come together and fight for it.”
