Rahul Gandhi’s claims and EC’s inaction

On November 5, Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, in his third such press conference in recent months, presented evidence alleging “large-scale” rigging of the 2024 Haryana Assembly elections.

In a series of detailed allegations, Rahul pointed to duplicate voter photographs, voter records in different states and names deleted from the rolls as evidence of systematic manipulation to falsify the results.

He said his team had data to prove that at least 25 lakh votes were forged, manipulated or cast fraudulently, which could undermine the legitimacy of the election process.

This caused heated discussions in the media and social networks.

Several mainstream media outlets, while covering the allegations extensively, questioned the scope and validity of his allegations. They pointed out that some of the anomalies referred to by Rahul, such as duplicate photographs of voters or names listed under “house number 0”, are common administrative errors seen in previous elections and do not necessarily indicate fraud.

In this part, we reason using EC’s own data and facts to ask a simple question: Why did the election commission not take decisive measures to investigate these allegations?
