American teenager Lerner Tian won his first title on the final day of the ATP regular season with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (8/6) win over Great Britain’s Cameron Nora on Saturday in Mecca.
“I’m so happy, but so tired,” said the 19-year-old Tian after winning the Mosel Open in a hard-fought tiebreak. I will remember this title and this tournament for a very long time.”
After reaching his first final in early October in Beijing, where he lost to Yannick Sinner, Tian fell to Nori, who also lost to last year’s Mecca finalist Benjamin Bonza of France.
Neither player was close to the top eight in the rankings and failed to qualify for the season finale, which opens in Turin on Sunday.
The 30-year-old Briton missed too many chances on his opponent’s serve, converting just two of nine break points to lose to Tien for the third time this season.
Nori missed a break point at 4-4 in the third set, which went to a tiebreak.
Nori raced to a 5-1 lead, but Tian won the next five points and, after losing the first match point on his own serve, sealed victory on an unforced error from Nori.
