Center revokes Punjab University’s ‘Syndicate and Senate’ restructuring order

Days after restructuring the ‘Syndicate and Senate’ of Punjab University, the Union Education Ministry on Friday (November 7, 2025) decided to revoke the order to change the constitution of the university and the composition of the senate and syndicate.

On the recommendation of the High Level Committee (HLC) constituted on March 2, 2021 by the Chancellor of the University and in consultation with various stakeholders, the Government of India in exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) read with sub-sections (2) and (3) of section 72 of the Punjab Reorganization Act, 1966 (31 of 1966) sent a notice to change the constitution and composition of the Senate and Syndicate of the Punjab University.

After the order was issued, several responses were received from stakeholders such as students, faculty, former V-Cs and the present VC of Punjab University. The Ministry of Education also considered the comments received in meetings with various student organizations, an official statement said on Friday.

“Taking into account the above, the Ministry of Education has now decided that the above-mentioned order to change the constitution and composition of the senate and syndicate is cancelled,” the statement added.

Opposition parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party, Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal in Punjab, as well as student organizations cornered the central government over its decision to restructure the ‘Senate and Syndicate’ of Punjab University.
