One of the most unforgettable experiences in Albania is undoubtedly a boat trip across Lake Koman to the remote Shala River. Along the way, you’ll navigate steep cliffs and lush green valleys, giving you the feeling of drifting through the Norwegian fjords. Lake Koman and the Shala River together form one of the most stunning landscapes in Albania. It’s the perfect place to completely unplug, enjoy a refreshing swim, and end your evening by a roaring campfire. Since visiting the Shala River requires a little preparation, we’ve put together all the practical tips and best things to do in this special region.
Lake Koman and Shala River are often seen as one destination, but they are actually two different places with their own character. Lake Coman is a large reservoir created by a dam on the Drin River. The area consists mostly of rugged slopes and dense greenery, although you will see some small settlements here and there. Many of these villages are not connected to the road network and can only be reached by water.
The Shala River (called Lumi i Shales in Albanian) is a tributary of the Drin River, located deep in the mountains. It takes time to get here, but the closer you get, the clearer the water becomes. It is not surprising that this section is a favorite among travellers. You’ll find a pebbly beach with deck chairs, a few casual bars, and a relaxed atmosphere that instantly puts you in vacation mode.
Many travelers book a Day trip to Shala River from Shkodër or Tirana. Perfect if you’re short on time – but for the best experience, stay at least two nights in accommodation along the Shala River. After 2:00 pm, when most day-trippers head back towards Coman, the beach empties. That’s when you will truly experience the magic of this place.
We stayed in Be Eco Guest Housea small inn located directly on the clear banks of the river. Wake up to peace and quiet and enjoy a refreshing morning swim and a coffee on your balcony overlooking the mountains. Aside from its amazing location, Bee Eco Guesthouse offers comfortable rooms, a private beach bar with deck chairs, an incredibly welcoming staff, and a restaurant serving delicious Albanian meals made with local ingredients – think fresh milk and meat from nearby farmers and honey from their own beehives.
Another option is Lake Riverside Komania budget friendly place just outside the Shala River. You can reach the Shala River from here by a short boat ride or kayaking. Since you’re staying just outside the busiest area, you’ll enjoy more peace and quiet.
advice: Accommodation at Shala River is limited and sells out quickly, especially in high season. Book as soon as possible to secure your place.

- You can climb the stairs opposite Bee Eco Guesthouse for a beautiful view overlooking the turquoise waters and surrounding peaks.
- Hike up Balcony’s point of view. The trail takes about 45 minutes and rewards you with sweeping views of the mountains and rivers below.
Here’s how you can get to the Shala River.
Via car rental
Boats to the Shala River depart daily from Koman Harbour. To get there, you’ll drive a stunning but rugged, partly unpaved mountain road. You cannot park your car directly at the port, as cars are left near the Komani Lake Tunnel. We stopped at Panorama CafeThe bus easily brought us to the port.
From Coman, long-tail boats take about an hour and a half to reach the Shala River. The trip itself is breathtaking! You can book tickets through your accommodation or online at Komani Berisha Lake ferry. It may also be possible to purchase tickets curbside, but availability is not guaranteed. Boats usually leave between 9:00 and 10:00 AM.
By daily tour
Traveling without a car? Then join This is a guided day trip to the Shala River. You will be picked up early from Tirana, Shkodër or Ligi, transferred to Koman Port, then take a boat ride to Shala River. Once you get there, you’ll have plenty of time to swim, kayak, or just relax. You can also hike with the guide to the viewpoint in about 45 minutes.
The best time to visit Koman Lake and Shala River is from mid-May until late September. The area is lush and green, boats run daily, and accommodations are open. Summer is the most popular season, as the weather is warm and sunny, with daytime temperatures often rising to over 30 °C (86 °F). Ideal for swimming, although July and August are also the busiest months for international travelers and Albanians on holiday.
In the fall and winter, most lodges and boat services are closed. The possibility of rain increases, temperatures drop, and access becomes difficult. Unless you are with a local guide and are specifically looking for a tough off-season adventure, visiting at this time is not recommended.
Visiting the Shala River is an amazing experience, but it is remote and facilities are limited. Keep these practical tips in mind:
- Plan to stay two nights Be Eco Guest House To get a full day to really enjoy the place.
- Bring water shoes, as the river bed is rocky and slippery.
- Take cash beforehand. There are no ATMs, and card payments are rarely accepted. Bring enough for lodging, meals, drinks, and activities.
- Pack warm clothes for the evening. Even when daytime temperatures rise to more than 30 °C (86 °F) in summer, nights in the valley get cold. In May and September, jackets and long trousers are a must.
- Expect limited internet. The Shala River is the perfect place to disconnect, whether you want to or not. Wi-Fi and mobile data are spotty at best.
