At first glance, Himare may seem like a sleepy coastal village, but there are plenty of things to discover in the area. Here are the top 8 things to do in Himare!
Watch the sunset from Himara Castle
Just a 10-minute drive from the city center, you’ll find Himara Castle, located on top of a hill. Originally dating back to ancient times, it was expanded over the centuries by the Byzantines and Ottomans. Today most of it is in ruins, but that is exactly what gives this place a mysterious charm. What makes it so special is the amazing view, where you can see the sea, the city and the surrounding mountains.
You can wander past old stone houses (some still inhabited), crumbling walls and small churches such as Keisha and Shane Surjit from Bacot. Here and there you will find small lookouts overlooking the Ionian Sea. Since Himara Castle is not an overly touristy area, you can almost always have the place to yourself. Make sure to come at sunset, when the castle and views are at their best.
