1. Dundee Backpackers Hostel

  • Best for: Anyone who actually wants to stay in a hostel
  • location: Right in the city centre
  • Price range: $
  • Pet friendly? no

Like I said, this isn’t just one of the best hostels in Dundee… it’s actually the only hostel in Dundee.

Dundee is a small place, and there are not many accommodation options (Or at least it doesn’t have many budget accommodation options). So, if you want to stay in a hostel, Book here, book now.

It has bedrooms and private rooms, is located right in the city centre, and is Dundee’s only social option. The kitchen is fully equipped, you get free tea and coffee, and the staff are welcoming and friendly. The common areas are uninteresting but crowded, and the bedrooms are a bit like hotels.

It’s not the cleanest or tidiest place in the world…but it’s a good hostel.

The hostel is in a great location close to the station, city centre, McManus Gallery and the V&A Gallery. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Our room was much larger than expected, very clean and had a great shower. The only drawback is that the location is central which meant late night revelers kept me awake until 3.00am. This is not the hostel’s fault, I am a very light sleeper but be aware of this. Other than that, we had a great stay in Dundee at this unique hotel.

2. Sleepers Hotel Dundee

  • Best for: Couples who want a mysterious slice of luxury
  • location: Right next to the train station
  • Price range: $$$
  • Pet friendly? no

Well, this is a hotel…so it’s not really one of the best hostels in Dundee (This, as I think I’ve made quite clear, is the case for all the accommodation options coming up on this list).

But even though it is not a hostel, it still has a lot of perks.

Sleeperz Hotel Dundee is part of a chain – and as with all Sleeperz venues, it’s much more reasonably priced than it looks.

In terms of value for money, this place is great. Because it is very elegant and modern, it is a good choice for a low-cost romantic getaway. It is located near the Medina River, and some rooms enjoy riverside views. It is a 2-minute walk from the train station.

It is very clean, spacious and has a bar and restaurant. The breakfast buffet is huge, affordable and full of hot and cold items.

If you want a reliable, modern hotel, Sleeperz Hotel Dundee is the best place on our list.

Great location for an overnight stay in Dundee. You can get from the train directly to the hotel, it’s very easy. A lovely welcome at the hotel reception and bar before dropping off bags and heading into the city centre. Brilliant. Everyone I met who worked there were really nice.

3. Holiday Inn Express Dundee

  • Best for: People who want a basic hotel
  • location: downtown
  • Price range: $$$
  • Pet friendly? no

Next door to Dundee Backpackers Hostel is the Holiday Inn Express, another hotel chain option.

It’s a little less modern than Sleeperz, but it’s a little (very slightly) less expensive.

The free breakfast buffet is good (and again has hot and cold items), the beds are comfortable, the staff is friendly, and the rooms are clean and tidy. Cons include small beds and small bedrooms.

Overall, yes, it’s a basic chain hotel…but it’s a very good basic chain hotel.

Pro Tip: When you stay here, you’ll be close to some of the city’s best attractions. Known options include: HMS Unicorn and McManuswhile lesser-known under-the-radar locations include Dundee Waterfront Gardens, the beautiful riverside stretches of the National Cycle Network routes 1 and 77. More about these bike routes here.

The room was quiet and comfortable, the bed very clean. It was a great room for the price, there were quality toiletries in the bathroom and the included breakfast was great. We will come back.

4. Shaftesbury Hotel Dundee

  • Best for: People who travel by plane, or those who like quiet neighborhoods
  • location: West of the city center
  • Price range: $$
  • Pet friendly? no

Another place that is not really one of the best hostels in Dundee. Sorry to disappoint you (again).

Despite its name, the Shaftesbury Hotel is more of a guesthouse than a hotel. It’s a bit old and outdated, but it’s cozy and cozy, and the hosts are friendly. The bedrooms are large, the beds are comfortable, and the bathrooms are great.

The cooked breakfast is excellent…and because it’s cooked to order, it’s the best breakfast you’ll find on this list.

The Shaftesbury Hotel is located west of the city centre, close to Dundee Airport (which is very small). If you’re taking one of the rare flights in or out of the city, this is where you’ll want to stay.

To get from the Shaftesbury Hotel to the city centre, you can walk for 30 minutes…or you can take one of the direct buses 5/5A, which will take you to the city center in 10 minutes.

Pro Tip: While you’re in this part of town, get yourself some Mills Observatorya fun planetarium with lots of big, chunky telescopes. Great for couples, great for families, great for basically everyone.

It’s easy to find, and street parking is available right outside the hotel. An impressive and welcoming building, beautifully designed inside. The single room was rather small but adequate, comfortable and very well appointed.

5. A small house in Dundee

  • Best for: Cool couples and digital nomads
  • location: North of downtown
  • Price range: $$
  • Pet friendly? no

The least expensive option of all the non-hostel options we’ve given you, this tiny house is, well… a tiny house.

One-bedroom apartment, ideal for people who want their own space, without having to spend a lot of money to get it. Great for short stays, freelancers, digital nomads and those who don’t want to make friends.

Features include modern furniture, a simple, homely atmosphere and a well-equipped kitchen. Cons include the bed (it’s a bit small and a bit uncomfortable), and less than ideal cleanliness.

This little house is not in very Downtown, but you’ll be there within a 15-minute walk…so it’s still very central.

Overall a nice little apartment and only a 15 minute walk into town. Everything was new, clean and fresh. The lodge was quiet, the local area was good and we got off street parking.

  • As you may have noticed so far, there is only one hostel in Dundee. So if you want to stay there, book it now. It sells out quickly and is a popular place.
  • …and on a related note, You must book in advance no matter where you want to stay. As there aren’t many places to stay in Dundee, they all sell out quickly, especially in the summer. And you don’t want to stay with only the most expensive places!
  • Tiny Dundee (It has a population of only about 150,000!) So you don’t have to worry too much about location. With the exception of the Shaftesbury Hotel, all the places we have brought to you are very central. However, if you want to be very close to the train station, stay at Sleeperz Dundee.
