Opened in 2019, Fingal is a former Northern Lighthouse Board (NLB) tender and has been transformed into a luxury hotel by the award-winning team at The Royal Yacht Britannia.
The hotel exudes an air of vintage Art Deco ocean elegance, combined with the charm and style of a luxury yacht.
Frank Bruyère, Director of Hospitality, expressed his gratitude for this honor, saying: “We are committed to providing a world-class visitor experience for all our guests in the UK and internationally, so it is a great honor to be recognized as one of the Best Hotels in the World and ‘Best of the Best’ in the UK in the 2024 TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards.”
The success of Fingal is testament to the dedication and professionalism of her entire crew, who work tirelessly to ensure everything is perfect on board Scotland’s only five-star luxury floating hotel.

Dan Mitchell, Vice President and General Manager of Hotels at TripAdvisor, praised the best hotels, saying: “Our best hotels are a marvel, won by thousands of travelers for their outstanding service, stunning design, and abundance of amenities that redefine what it means to have an exceptional hotel experience.”
Fingal’s Lighthouse Restaurant and Bar is open to non-residents for afternoon tea, dinner and cocktails, and offers a selection of independent private food stalls for small, pre-booked groups.
Each of the ship’s 22 luxury cabins is named after Stevenson Lighthouses, inspired by Fingal’s rich maritime heritage.
The hotel’s double-height ballroom and bridge provide dedicated dining spaces for private events, corporate celebrations and weddings.
The Fingal is located opposite Port of Leith tram stop, providing direct and fast transport links between Leith and Edinburgh city centre.
A £5 million investment by Royal Yacht Britannia has transformed this classically designed vessel, which was launched in 1962 as the last ship built by Glasgow’s Blythswood Shipyard.
The Fingal spent most of her service life operating out of Oban for 30 years, followed by her final six years at Stromness, Orkney, before being sold to a private owner who maintained the ship for 14 years before purchasing Britannia in August 2014.
Tim, from the Walk With Me YouTube channel, stayed at the hotel and gave a full review of the hotel and the inside of the ship.
