Tips for the best things to do in Dhermi, Albania

Dhërmi is a destination with two sides. On one side is the mountain village high up in the hills, where you can wander through narrow cobblestone lanes, pass ancient churches, and quietly enjoy stunning views of the mountains and coast. On the other hand, life pulses along the beach. About a 10-minute drive from the village lies the wide Dhërmi Beach, with a lively promenade lined with beach clubs, modern hotels and atmospheric restaurants. This combination of tranquility and buzz makes Dhërmi a great stop on your road trip through Albania. What’s more, the area is perfect for getting active and enjoying beautiful nature, so Dhërmi truly has something for all types of travellers.

Side note: The places and activities in this article overlap somewhat with those in our article about Himare. This is because Dermi and Himari are close to each other, and you can use either of them as a base for this area.

Dhërmi is not only for sun seekers, it is also a great base for various activities and attractions in the area. Below you’ll find tips to help you make the most of your visit to Dhërmi.

Head to Llogara Pass

Llogara Pass is one of the most impressive driving routes in Albania. If you have a (rented) car during your stay in Dhërmi, this drive deserves a place on your list. The base of the pass is about a 15-minute drive from Dhërmi, and from there the Llogara Pass winds its way through the Llogara Mountains to an altitude of about 1,000 meters (3,281 ft) above sea level.

You’ll need at least an hour to drive the entire trail, and plan extra time to enjoy the many great viewpoints along the way. As you navigate the Llogara Pass, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views: everything from vast pine forests and steep rock faces to the deep blue waters of the Ionian Sea. The sharp bends and steep grades make it a ride you won’t soon forget.

advice: You don’t have to take the mountain pass all the way back down on your return trip. A new tunnel was opened that cuts through the mountains in less than 15 minutes.

Relax at the beach club on Dhërmi Beach

Dhërmi Beach is the beating heart of the coastal town. This pebbly beach stretches along the turquoise Ionian Sea, and the promenade is filled with people looking for sun, sea and a good time. Everything you need for a perfect day at the beach is here – from simple restaurants to trendy beach bars with lounge chairs, cocktail parties and DJs. To enjoy a lively atmosphere, refreshing swimming and great food, you don’t even need to leave the beach.

advice: For the most beautiful stretch of beach, head to Luciano. This beach club is more expensive than most along the promenade, but it is located between dramatic rock formations in the water. There are only a few deck chairs, so it’s quieter than other parts of the beach.

Visit the Monastery of Saint Mary

The Monastery of Saint Mary is located above the mountain village of Dhermi, against the green slopes. This centuries-old monastery is a wonderfully peaceful place that offers a fascinating glimpse into Albania’s religious history. Dating back to the 13th century, the complex is dedicated to the Holy Virgin Mary, and still includes parts of the original frescoes, stunning remnants of Byzantine art. It’s the combination of history, serenity and scenery that makes this place special.

From the ancient center of Dhërmi, follow a steep, winding path upwards. After about 10 to 15 minutes of climbing, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the turquoise Ionian Sea and Dhërmi with its white limestone houses, red roofs and narrow streets.

advice: For a very special experience, visit the Monastery of Saint Mary just before sunset. On your way back down, stop in the heart of Dhërmi Old Town at safetyfun bar in one of the big squares. With an iced drink in hand, enjoy stunning views of the village and coastline – the perfect place to end the day as the sun sets behind the mountains.

Hike to Gjipe Beach

Jeppe Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Albania, and for good reason. This secluded cove is nestled between towering cliffs at the end of the impressive Jeppe Valley. The combination of steep rock walls, clear water, and relaxed atmosphere makes it a great place for a day at the beach.

Its remote location means you’ll need to make a little effort to get there. From Dhërmi, drive towards Parking area at Gjipe Beach. From there, an unpaved road heads towards the coast. Don’t have a 4×4? You’ll cover the route on foot in about 30 to 40 minutes. If you have a 4×4 car, you can drive all the way to the beach.

The hike in itself is an experience. You’ll follow a rocky path with stunning views of the coast. As you approach the beach, the rugged landscape unfolds – gorgeous turquoise waters surrounded by steep canyon walls.

Hike to Vilkori Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Albania

South of Himare, about a 40-minute drive from Durmi, you’ll find Vilkori Beach – one of our favorite beaches in Albania. The hiking trail to this little paradise is not easy, and that’s exactly what makes it special.

To get here, drive to This spot And park your car in the small pull-out area along the road. From there, you can walk uphill a little until you reach an open field overlooking the sea. From here the descent to the beach begins. Although the path is not marked, it is intuitive – there is a clear path through the brush leading down. The last section is the most exciting: you’ll go down a steep road with a deep drop on the side. There is a fixed rope you can grab onto for added grip. Sturdy shoes are essential for this climb.

Below, a narrow, quiet bay awaits, surrounded by high cliffs and clear waters. It’s a great place to take a dip and relax before continuing the climb again. Don’t forget to bring water and snacks – there are no facilities on Vilkori Beach.

Livadi Beach

About a 30-minute drive from Dhërmi, Livadi Beach is a long pebbly beach perfect if you’re having a relaxing day at the beach. You won’t need anything here, as there are a few cozy beach bars and nice lunch spots. Tonea’s All Day Brunch & Café is our favorite: a cozy place that serves delicious sandwiches, salads, and pies!

Gigiri and Aquariumite

This secluded bay is nestled between rocks and owes its name to the clear waters and surprisingly colorful marine life. The road is unpaved and bumpy, but Gjiri i Akuariumit is well worth it.

Day trip to Himare

Himarë is a charming coastal town located about a 30-minute drive from Dhërmi. The drive alone is worth it – you’ll follow a winding road with fantastic views of the coast, massive rock formations and surrounding mountains.

Once you get there, you’ll quickly notice that the feel of Himarë is a little different than Dhërmi. It’s quieter and smaller, with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. You will find a wide beach with clear blue waters and a long promenade where you can stop for a coffee or a delicious lunch with sea views. In addition to the gorgeous beaches and quaint restaurants, there are also a few beautiful historical landmarks in the area.
