Estonian design

Did you know that Estonia is very famous for its design? I certainly didn’t, until we visited Estonian design house. Although Estonia is only a small country, the density of designers is very high. Some even say that there is one designer for every 800 people!

My group got a peek behind the scenes at one of the on-site design studios and met with Marcus Vihama of REIT Australia Design team. They design clothing made from recycled materials, and each piece in their collection is labeled with a unique calculation of environmental impact.

The location of the studio has changed since my visit; The Design House is currently located east of the Old City in Solaris Kiskus, Estonia PST 9Reet Aus can be found west of the Old City in Teleskivi TN 60A-5.

Another interesting place you can visit if you love design and architecture is Rotermann districta little north of the Design House. This area began as an industrial center in the late 19th century, and the factories have been preserved despite redevelopment plans. Used in the 1980s, the area began to transform in the 2000s and is now partly an upscale residential and commercial area.

Are you looking for good souvenirs to take home with you? I recommend a visit Balti Gamma Torg. This huge indoor market has many food stalls, shops and even a vintage market where I’m sure you’ll find something you like: there are nearly 300 merchants on three floors! The first floor is mainly dedicated to Estonian designs, crafts, clothing, home goods and antiques, so I would take the time to browse through all the goodies if I were you.
