If you’re planning a winter dog sledding trip in Finland, I can highly recommend traveling from Helsinki to the Savo region…and adding a Sawo Husky safari to your itinerary. This adventure with Siberian huskies in southeastern Finland is one you’ll never forget!

Introduction to SAWO HUSKY
Located in Lempyy, in the heart of the Savo region in south-eastern Finland, Sawo Husky has been offering day and night safaris with huskies since 2014.
You can either drive the sled yourself, or sit back, relax (like we did) and enjoy the ride with an experienced guide.
And what an amazing guide we had! Laura Kääriäinen has been working with Siberian Huskies since 2008 and is the expert when it comes to dog sledding. She competes in middle-distance dog sledding competitions and is responsible for the care and training of Sawo Husky’s 37 dogs.
Husky riding experience
I was so glad that Laura was my friend Cora’s driver on our safari, because while I was very excited, I was a little nervous about the whole experience.
Fortunately, my nerves flew away at the speed of the sled rush, and I was soon able to enjoy the natural beauty of the area, seeing the huskies working together and listening to the lovely little instructions Laura gave the dogs.
If you go to My account on Instagramand look up my reel about the husky sled (or check out the bottom of this article), you can hear it in action and also enjoy the view from the sled as if you were there yourself.

After the trip, you can hang out with the huskies. They are so eager to cuddle!
If you’re able to stop by to cuddle them at some point, you can warm up in a traditional Finnish hut where, over a warm drink and a snack, a guide will tell you more about dog life, their training, and the general lifestyle of working with these unique animals.
Judgment
This activity is 100% approved by travel test, 10/10, 5 stars.
What really caught my attention during this bucket list experience was the great concern for the dogs’ well-being by the Sawo Husky team.
This is not a crowded tourist attraction at all, instead the dogs get plenty of space, different forms of exercise and adequate rest every day.
The dogs are also retired when needed (while remaining on the property), and they get quality food and even a masseuse and regular check-ups by a physiotherapist, I’m told!
