Daily direct flights between Agartala and Bagdogra in North Bengal officially began on Sunday, while air services connecting Agartala with Silchar in South Assam are set to resume on Tuesday after nearly 30 years.
The inaugural Air India Express flight departed Agartala at 6.10 pm and is scheduled to land in Bagdogra at 7.20 pm, Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials said.
The new route is expected to positively impact tourism and business opportunities in both Tripura and North Bengal. Traditionally, travelers from Tripura relied on trains to reach North Bengal and Sikkim, a journey that covers about 1,200 kilometers and takes about 24 hours.
Meanwhile, IndiGo is scheduled to offer a flight connecting Agartala with Silchar starting Tuesday, operating twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays. This service was discontinued in the mid-nineties.
With these new options, Agartala will now have direct air connections with 10 destinations across the country, including Kolkata, Delhi, Imphal, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Dibrugarh, Guwahati and Chennai.
