India advances in Australian tourism rankings with 14% increase in spending, ETTravelWorld

Tourism Australia concluded the 19th edition of its flagship B2B event, Australia Marketplace India (AMI), in Jaipur this week. The event, held from August 3 to 6, brought together more than 100 Indian travel agents and 82 Australian tourism vendors, signaling a major boost to the India-Australia tourism corridor.

The event witnessed increasing participation from accommodation vendors, attractions, tour operators and state tourism boards, reflecting a clear intention to meet India’s growing demand for premium travel experiences.

India’s prominence in Australia’s domestic travel charts continues to grow. In the year ending May 2025, Australia welcomed 453,000 Indian visitors, up 10 per cent year-on-year, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics data. Indian tourist spending also saw a 14 per cent increase, to A$2.7 billion in the year ending March 2025.

Commenting on this growth, Jennifer Doig, Regional General Manager for South and South East Asia at Tourism Australia, said:

“India is one of Australia’s most promising inbound markets. Marketplace India serves as a vital platform to deepen relationships with trade partners and highlight the destination’s premium offerings. The continued rise in traveler numbers and spending underscores Australia’s growing appeal among high-value holidaymakers in India.”

Nishant Kashikar, Tourism Australia’s Regional Director for India and Gulf, added:

“Today’s Indian traveler is looking for immersive experiences, and Australia is delivering on this front. India’s rise from seventh to fifth in Australia’s source markets shows that our marketing and business partnerships are paying off. Our Australian professionals and frontline agents are playing a key role in building this momentum.”

Tourism Australia has leveraged multiple initiatives – including digital visa access, direct air connectivity, and culturally resonant campaigns such as “Howzat for a Holiday?” – To expand demand from India. Australia’s growing Indian diaspora, now approaching one million people and over 100,000 Indian students, supports frequent travel through family and social connections.

Platforms such as the Aussie Specialist Program, Aussie 365 On Demand and G’day Australia are being used to train over 3,000 agents across India to sell Australian travel more effectively.

As connectivity improves and traveler appetite grows, Tourism Australia remains focused on positioning the country as a top choice for Indian leisure travellers.
