Sea urchin picking experience at Kamui Park
Kamui-149-2 Kutsugata, Rishiri, Rishiri District, 097-0401, Draw a map
Rishiri Uni is considered the highest degree university in Japan. After all, he’s feeding on the nutrient-rich kombu risiri that he’s famous for. I love how a delicious food ecosystem leads to more delicious foods.
Weather permitting, you can catch sea urchins straight from the ocean at Kamui Park and learn how to open them. On the day of our visit, the water was very choppy, but they replicated the experience outside.
I chose one that was very active in my basket, and I was fascinated by the spikes it waved at me. Part of me felt guilty that I wasn’t used to eating my own meal, but there was no way I was going to Rishiri Island without tasting this meal. For 2000 yen, I would have done it many times over if I had stayed longer. Or if I have another redo, I’ll clear my schedule and just put this on my itinerary frequently.
Pro Tip: This activity is seasonal from June to August (harvest is primary in July and August).
