Airlines flight fares to various parts of the country and within the state on Friday as the demand for tickets increases ahead of Diwali.
Flight fares to major metro cities including New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Hyderabad have seen a four-fold increase. Tickets were sold for up to 30,000 for Delhi, against 7,000 for regular fares. The flight fares to Mumbai have gone up to 20,000, while the regular fare will be around 4,000.
Kolkata’s tickets saw an increase of 22,000 while destinations like Guwahati saw an increase of up to 21,000. Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, during the celebrations, mohan Naidu had instructed not to increase ticket fares by unreasonably high amount during the celebrations. He wanted the Fare Monitoring unit of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to maintain a strict watch on air tickets and register passengers’ complaints against high airlines on Airsewa, the ministry’s passenger complaints portal again. Apart from the metros, the fares are manifold to independent destinations like Trichy, Coimbatore, Madurai and Salem.
Air Passengers Union of India rejected the practice as unfair and oppressive. “There should be a cap on air tickets during festival seasons to keep air travel affordable for all,” said Sankar, President of the Association.
