Suborno Bose, Chairman and Senior Lecturer, IIHM, discussed the possible career options of students who have passed through hospitality training institutes. Today, the pandemic has only increased opportunities for hospitality graduates, and IHM trains students and prepares them for the industry.
Bose believes that the pandemic world will create opportunities for industrial aspirants and will require more understanding of areas that are increasingly important these days, such as technological advances in the hospitality sector.
The pandemic has affected every industry, and the hospitality industry has been the fastest to respond to the changes taking place around the world. The resilience and adaptability of the industry showed itself during the pandemic. Leading hospitality brands are also developing in areas such as operations, resulting in lean, efficient structures. These brands have more technological integration and are becoming more innovative.
The post-pandemic world will create new and unexpected avenues for hospitality students. Areas such as industrial technology solutions, low-touch service models, disaster management, proactive operational planning and possibly backup will require more understanding. With such demands, the need for skilled hospitality professionals is only going to increase. Therefore, education should also equip students with skills that will make them more efficient and prepare for the future. Hospitality as a profession will continue to be dynamic, demanding and exciting.
Offers entrepreneurial opportunities with Sahas
Hospitality education provides a lot of practical training and exposure and holistic development of iithm students. While IIHM trains them to enter the job market in various fields, it also inspires them to start their own entrepreneurship in the interests of the area. There is also a special entrepreneur development cell called Sahas. It is a Corpus fund where students who are really keen to start their own entrepreneurship can have venture capital. They must provide a practical and achievable business model to take advantage of the field’s facilities.
The pandemic situation has left many young people wondering what to do with their careers. However, many IIHM students have started and successfully run their businesses during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown. IHM provides an environment and a support system where students feel confident and empowered to turn their dreams and ideas into reality.
IIHM created a Corpus Fund through an initiative called SAHAS. The idea is to encourage students to start their own entrepreneurship and iHM will support their ideas through SAHAS. This initiative encouraged many students to innovate and start their own startups during the lockdown.
Upskilling for a post-pandemic world
The most desired skills in today’s market are soft skills. Many research publications and thinkers have predicted that the pandemic world will place more emphasis on soft skills. This means a lot of people skills which are also very important in the hospitality industry.
HMI helps students understand and master the power of soft skills. As these students blaze their career paths, these soft skills will be key determinants of their futures, making them resilient and adaptable, developing the ability to change minds, be uncertain, and build trust. These signs will help you be both short-term and long-term when exploring new opportunities and avenues in a pandemic world.
Throughout the pandemic, IIHM tried to motivate students, faculty and staff. Staying in close contact with students to understand their needs and concerns helps them engage in learning and campus activities through the online environment. The Inter-College Festoral organized by IIHM last year, Rigolo, was made an online platform where students were encouraged to participate and showcase their talents.
In 2020, when the first wave and the entire nation went under a lockdown, iithm was one of the first institutions to decide to continue the educational process through the online medium. Because we have the technology, we could start classes right away. However, Bose pointed out that IIHM has a background in virtual classes, as several international chefs and hospitality professionals have often taken online classes in recent times. So this was another opportunity to explore new age training practices.
The common misconception that hospitality is only about hotels is being clarified and IIHM education is moving forward. There is a world of opportunity waiting for hospitality students and iHM is constantly encouraging students to explore more business and entrepreneurial opportunities. Hospitality students are in demand in various fields such as travel, event management, banking, healthcare, luxury real estate, luxury retail, aviation, aviation, cruises and others. These jobs involve a variation of tasks and involve innovation and personal interaction. Culinary students are also taught entrepreneurial and business acumen, equipping them with a foundation ready for future ventures.
IIHM’s vision is to take hospitality education to a different level that will prepare today’s students for the industries and businesses of tomorrow. By leading change and making his students the new normal that has changed the world forever in the past two years. Exploring the possibilities of hospitality education, the FIIHM Scholarship Program has shared with students experts from across the industry who will recommend and share industry experience. A research center in tourism is also planned which is the need of the hour for seamless integration of hospitality education with tourism research.
