The U.S. State Department announced that Consular staff chose to deny the visa interview request of May’s F, M, and Academic J visa applicants. International students pursuing a degree course are granted an F-1 visa, while those pursuing a professional course of study are granted an M-1 visa. J visas are issued not only to students, but also to those on an exchange program, including professors, research scholars, short-term scholars, and professionals.

However, this waiver would apply only if such applicants had previously been granted a visa and had not been denied or denied such a visa, or if there were potential inequities. “So now, if a student who wants to fly to the United States has traveled before or on a tourist visa, it would be possible for the interview to be waived,” he said.

The price also applies to first-time F, M and Academic J visa applicants who are nationals of a country participating in the ‘Visa Waiver Program’ (VWP). But India is not covered under this program. Applicants from non-VBP countries with prior visa issuance may be required to submit biometric fingerprints if they are under 14 years of age, but may still be approved for an interview waiver, according to a press release from DOS. The release acknowledged the role played by international students and emphasized that “international students are now and will always be among DOS’s highest priorities.”

Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said he had raised the issue “in some detail” with his Australian counterpart Marise Payne.

As a result, how it rolls will depend on the local consular offices in India. “We encourage applicants to check the website of the appropriate US embassy or consulate to confirm the level of services currently offered and to find instructions on how to apply for a visa without an interview,” he said.

Consular offices in India have so far conducted interviews and processed student visas. With the pandemic-related travel ban in place, students automatically granted national interest waivers and travel authorization, the US embassy and consulates in India announced that more student visa applicants have been approved than before in 2021.

“Through these efforts, more than 55,000 students and exchange visitors have applied to study in the United States, and more students are being approved every day.
