(L to r) bidisha sey, shombi sharp, tim curtis, dorji choijom, tashi darkar, vigyat singh_On October 17, International Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Day, UNESCO, UN India and Royal Enfield came together to celebrate the living heritage of the Indian Himalayan region at the UN House in New Delhi to celebrate the living heritage of the greater Himalaya. Launched in 2022 under the UNESCO-Royal Enfield Partnership, the collaborative initiative is dedicated to documenting, preserving and celebrating the diverse cultural practices of Himalayan communities.
Since its inception, Greater Himalayan exploration has documented over 250 communities across 11 geographies including Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Magura, Nagaland, Assam and North Bengal, ASGAM and North Bengal. The initiative aims to raise awareness of living heritage through community leadership, extreme experiences, exhibitions and storytelling, exhibitions and storytelling. A four-part docuseries recently produced by National Geographic and Stream on Nationstar brings to life the interactions between riders and local communities in the Himalayan belt.

Speaking at the event, India’s Himalayan Coordinator said, “India’s Himalayan communities,” an important initiative that brings together India’s Himalayan communities in relation to people, culture and nature, cultural heritage, environmental management and local livelihoods. Living heritage is essential to advancing the sustainable development goals and ensuring a more inclusive future for all. “
Tim Curtis, Regional Office of UNESCO for South Asia, added, “This initiative shows how communities, researchers and storytellers can come to be in a living form, develop their adaptation to their environment and history. UNESCO is proud of Royal Enfield in following the sounds of the Himalayas and following the living traditions to inspire generations to come.”
At the core of the concept was the presentation of responsible tourism action plans developed by the latest batch of fellows who underwent six months of intensive mentoring and training. Spread across ecologically and culturally important sites such as Rangapani in Assam and Shergaon in Arunachal Pradesh, it promotes waste-free tourism, agro-tourism and nature-related cultural experiences.

Fireside chat, Tim Curtis, Bidisha Dey and community representatives CHHOIJOM in Arunachal Pradesh, Tashi Dolker and Ladon’s wool weaving in Arunachal Pradesh” followed among Chhoijom grain of an artisan who preserves his traditions. The dialogue explored the intersections of heritage conservation, climate resilience and sustainable development, highlighting the role of public-private partnerships in advancing the UN’s sustainable development goals.
The evening marked the launch of the second edition of Royal Enfield’s annual sustainability magazine (2024-25), featuring Rider’s magazines, photo essays, as well as documents from ICH and Sikkim from Ladakh and Sikkim and Sustainability Stories and Sustainability Stories from the Himalayas.
Additionally, Royal Enfield has announced the second edition of its multi-discipline festival traveling the Himalayas to be held from December 4-10, 2025 at TRRAVANCORE Palace, New Delhi. Our theme this year will be to express ourselves, celebrate Himalayan culture, craft and creativity, community and inquiry, bringing communities and audiences together to honor the spirit of living heritage through arts and dialogues.
